Karinthip Village

Karinthip Village, the legend of Mae Ping River has a long history for over 700 years. The river is known as “Lifeline of Chiangmai Province”. The land before Karinthip Village was developed, was part of Mae Ping River line. The river once was used for the transport of timbers from pier to pier. Elephants were to pull timbers off the river. And for that reason, an elephant pier was built in this land. For every 100 years, the river changed its flowing direction and later created a land, which was called “Jang Sri Phoom”. (The city wall located in the East) Later on, more people started to move in and the city has become developed.

Historically, Prathat Doi Suthep was built in an era of King Keu Na of the Lanna Kingdom. He moved one of the relic, (the relic was broken into 2 pieces by its magical powers) from Wat Suandok to Doi Suthep by placing half of the relic on the back of a sacred white elephant and sent it off to Doi Suthep, along the rough journey, the elephant trumpeted a last call and then dropped dead. On that spot, King Keu Na then built the temple and that was in the year of 1384. The architecture of the temple was mixed between Chiangsan and SriLanka.

Wat Chompoo was built by King Keu Na as well from the request of the king’s mother, Pranang Choa Pimpa, that Wat Doi Suthep was too far and too difficult for old people to visit. King Keu Na then named temple “Wat Mai Pimpa” after it was built. Prathat Doi Suthep was built with copper-plated chedi topped by a five-tiered gold umbrella, while Prathat Wat Mai Pimpa was topped by a seven-tiered gold umbrella. Later the name of the temple was changed to Wat Chompoo named after the venerable monk Chompoo, who had a magical power and used to stay in the temple.

"Location of the Karinthip Village"
The village was built in the area of an elephant pier. From here, both golden pagodas can be clearly seen. A magical well was built for over 700 years in this land as the time the golden pagodas were built. The well provided the people in and around this area with water for washing, bathing, and drinking from generations to generations. People believed that if the well was closed, disasters would come and the land would be destroyed. Therefore, the well remains opened and the water is still clean.

Karinthip Village uses a flying elephant fully dressed as a memorial of the history. Karinthip means an elephant from the heaven, therefore, the resort name was created, “Karinthip Village” The elephant standing right in front of the resort was named “Karinthip”. Karinthip was fully dressed to remind people of the white elephant that carried the relic to Doi Suthep. At the time the owner planned to develop this land, she had a dream of a white elephant staying right where it is right now and a building in front of her with Colonial Architecture. The owner did some research and found that this land was owned by Burmese for 200 years, which at that time Burmese was a British colony and the city style was influenced by this reason. Colonial Suite of Karinthip Village was decorated to match the history. The story is pretty amazing. Karinthip Village wants to bring you back to the amazing history of Lanna and we’d like to replenish your happiness by “The Historical of Mae Ping River”.
